During the spring and summer terms of 2022, we are running a fantastic Trust wide public speaking competition: Make Yourself Heard, aimed at both primary and secondary students. Students in Years 7 and 8 will have the opportunity to create a ‘mini TED talk’ where they speak for just three minutes about something they are passionate about. They can speak about anything, whether that’s the environment, politics, school life or their favourite sports team or anything else that ignites their interest!
This process will be started in class and then students will be supported in the development of their TED talks as time moves forward, with discussions about the skills and wording they need in order for this to sound passionate, professional and creditable as a TED talk.
Closing date for submissions is Thursday 6th June 2022, when entries will be judged by the Regional Lead Practitioner Amy Rose. Two finalists from each region will then be chosen to present in the Live Final (held virtually), which will take place on Thursday 30th June for primary students and Friday 1st July 2022.
All participants will receive a certificate. The regional winners will receive medals and the final (1st, 2nd and 3rd) placing students will receive medals and a £25 Amazon voucher each. The winner will receive a Make Yourself Heard trophy and the winning academy’s English department will receive £250, to put towards resources or enrichment experiences.
Mrs George will be the nominated staff member who will be offering training, where needed, will give students advice and guidance on topics, give feedback on their talks and help with uploading and submitting the videos to your Regional Lead Practitioner once they are completed.
This is a great opportunity to enliven speaking and listening, promote oracy across OSSMA and give students a chance to express themselves in a professional environment – overlapping with careers and PSHE!
These videos will be submitted to Ormiston Academy Trust Head Office and on OAT’s social media presence.
Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs George should you have any objections, concerns or if would like to remove your child from the official competition. If this is the case, we can offer an alternate version of this task that is voice only/ written, then judged internally and not displayed on social media.
